    (Latín) Se trata de un nombre muy popular en Roma. Significa "Señor", "Amo de su casa" y el femenino Caya significa "señora", "ama de su casa". En el contrato matrimonial la mujer pronunciaba la frase ritual 'Ubi tu Caius, ego Caia'. (En tanto en cuanto tú seas señor, yo seré señora). Con ella daba a entender que entraba a formar parte de la familia del marido y tomaba el nombre gentilicio de éste.
